Extractor tools come in a variety of sizes and types, each suited to different applications. When selecting the correct puller for the job, it’s crucial to take certain points into consideration.

Selecting the Right Extractor Tool

  • Puller Reach - When choosing an extractor tool, make certain the available distance between the pulling surface of the jaw and the jaw head of the extractor tool is enough to attach the puller.
  • Puller Spread – The extractor tool spread is double the distance from the center bolt to the pulling surface of the jaw. Ensure that the extractor tool you’ve selected has a large enough spread to attach to the component being removed.
  • Tonnage – This is the amount of pulling force that can be exerted by the extractor tool. A rule of thumb is that the center bolt diameter must be at least ½ the diameter of the shaft from which the component is being removed.

Extractor tools can frequently be used to lift heavy and even dangerous components in environments with lots of moving parts, so always wear a good pair of gloves and safety glasses.
