How Generators Work

Electric generators are simply devices that convert mechanical energy obtained from external sources, such as fuels, into an output of electrical energy. They do this through the process of magnetic induction. This basically means that the generator uses fuel to move an electrical conductor through a magnetic field, which creates induction, or a flow, of electrons. This translates into an electric current moving through the wire.

Generators can perform this function through the use of a variety of different methods. The mechanical energy needed to turn the generator and produce an electrical charge generally come from fuels such as gasoline or diesel. However, they can also come from natural sources. Windmills and hydroelectric plants are examples of electrical energy generation accomplished using natural and renewable resources.

Generator Safety

Generators quickly produce high levels of carbon dioxide, so it is vital that generators are run outdoors in well-ventilated areas. Even if windows and doors are open, carbon dioxide can and will build up to deadly levels if a generator is run inside of the home. It is suggested that you keep a CO2 monitor nearby when using a generator to ensure your safety.
