Grinders and Abrasive Wheels
The Right Way to Smooth Everything Out

Abrasive wheels and grinders are a surefire way to make sure that your project is even and smooth, without rough edges that can affect durability and safety. They can be used on a variety of materials and for many purposes, and make quite a difference in how something looks, performs, and is applied. With over 60 years of experience in sales and repair, Ideal Tool and Equipment Service is the prime Philadelphia retailer and maintenance center for top of the line grinder and abrasive wheels manufacturers, including:

  • Black & Decker
  • Bosch
  • Bostitch
  • DeWalt
  • Hitachi
  • Kawasaki
  • Metabo
  • Milwaukee
  • MK Diamond
  • RYOBI
  • Porter Cable
  • Skil

Although it may seem a bit daunting as to which grinder and wheel is best for the job, you can narrow the search by the following:

  • Abrasive Material For maximum efficiency and safety, use the correct abrasive material, which includes aluminum oxide, diamond, flapper, silicon carbide, tuck pointing, and wire/brush.

  • Adjustable Side Handle and Guard: Allows for use by either hand, and helps protect against flying particles.

  • Disc Size: As implied, larger sizes handle bigger work, so choose accordingly between 4 ½ to 9 inches.

  • Speed: Speed range is typically between 2,000 to 7,000 RMP, and available as single or variable control rates.

  • Wheel: Wheels vary according to their use. Common ones include dish, flaring cup, saucer, and straight.

Always keep in mind that because of this tool's powerhouse force, it must be handled with precise attention. OSHA (Occupational Safety and Hazards Administration) reports that 80% of grinder or wheel injuries require medical attention, mostly due to standing too close to an overheated blade, kickback from sharp material, or using the wrong blade. Wear safety goggles and thick gloves and boots, make sure that every component is free of cracks or defects, do not use in wet conditions, keep hair and jewelry out of the way, do not change discs until power is off, and only use on clean surfaces. If using a corded model, keep the cable well away from the wheel, and use a dust mask if necessary.
