Philadelphia Women are Doing It Themselves

Do women ever need Paslode nail gun repair? Yes, they do. Ideal Tool & Equipment Service regularly assists female customers who bring their power tools in for maintenance and repair.

Women Homeowners

Women are a significant and growing number of homeowners who want to save money by doing their own home improvements and repairs. It’s a trend that has been going on for a number of years, and not just in the United States. Women are renovating kitchens, installing floors, and purchasing the power tools that make it possible.

The Do-It-Herself (DIH) movement is not new. Rosie the Riveter, and the Pretty Plumber certainly paved the way for this century’s female carpenters. We can’t know if Rosie ever purchased her own home. However, today’s single woman is twice as likely as the single male to do just that. This is truly a societal change. So, yes, women do need Paslode nail gun repair.

Women Purchase Power Tools for Home Improvement

Women tackle home projects for the same reasons men traditionally have. It’s a good way to save money during these tough economic times. Contractors are expensive. It goes beyond issues of money, though. Completing even minor home improvements gives one a sense of pride and satisfaction. The statistics below show why there are more female do-it-yourselfers:

  • 19% of homebuyers are single women, which is the 2nd largest category according to the National Association of Realtors (NAR).
  • 90% of single female homebuyers call themselves “do-it-yourselfers.”
  • 29% of power tools are purchased by women

Local Philly business and radio station WBEB has featured several stories on the topic, reporting that:

  • More than 45 million women are the head of households in the United States.
  • Women purchase 61% of major home “fix-up” products.

Focus on Philadelphia and Its Suburbs

As of 2012, females made up 50.8% of the U.S. population. How does that number compare to the number of women in Philadelphia and its suburbs? There are proportionally more women in and around Philly than the national average. Chester county comes closest to the national average with a 50.9% female population. Bucks, Delaware, Montgomery, and Philadelphia counties are above the U.S. average reporting 51%, 52%, 51.5%, and 52.8% respectively.

This mean there are more women in the Philadelphia area doing their own drywall repair, installing kitchen shelves, laying tile in the bathroom, and fixing the garage door.

Below are percentages of households headed by single females in the Philly-area based on the 2010 census. Nationally, the percentage of households headed by women (with and without family) stands at approximately 29.4%.

Area Resources for the Female Fixer-Upper

Traditions and stereotypes mean women do not always learn repair techniques, or renovation tips from their fathers, as many men may have. So where can women learn how to skillfully wield the power tools they are purchasing? Power tool companies like Paslode are doing provide online resources such as instructional videos so that anyone can pick up these skills.

Hands-on practice and one-on-one tutorials are sometimes available locally. Philly Woodworks and Habitat for Humanity Philadelphia are two local organizations that frequently offer women-only workshops.  Philadelphia Furniture Workshop and sometimes vocational and technical schools offer courses for beginners (male and female).
